Very interesting grouping. Dickson Mounds is one of the largest burial mound complexes in the Midwest and provides important insight into prehistoric Native American life, health, and mortuary practices in the Illinois River Valley. Excavations began in the early 20th century (notably by Don Dickson in the 1920s). For decades, the museum exhibited open burial pits with visible skeletons, making it one of the most unusual archaeological displays in the U.S. Following changing ethical standards and laws like NAGPRA (1990), the remains were removed from display and many were repatriated and reburied.
