Just when you finally thought you had every Dick Tracy item ever made, we come along and prove you wrong. This is the only known roll of wallpaper, and it is highly unlikely there will ever be another. The ephemeral nature of this piece makes it even more amazing that even one roll survived. This roll consists of seven full vertical panels featuring B.O. Plenty, Gravel Gertie, Chief Pat Patton, Tess, Junior, Sam Catchem, Sparkle Plenty, and, of course, Dick Tracy. Harlan Ellison's statement of provenance on this item reads even more interestingly than the usual comments. In part, he writes: "About twenty or so years ago, I received a phone call here in Los Angeles from an old pal I hadn't heard from in decades. He was in Chicago, still working construction (we'd worked demo and some hi-steel together in New York, a long time ago), and he said he'd come across something he thought I'd find interesting. And this is what he told me: he'd been working a demolition job on a turn-of-the-century warehouse on the South Side, 'back o' the yards,' and in the process, came across a sealed and painted-over door in what had been a storeroom of immense size, on a upper floor. When they knocked it down, they found a huge, dusty roomful of old wallpaper rolls in bins and vertical storage boxes, that had clearly been sealed off for a long time. They started cleaning it out, and my friend John K. noticed a roll of what turned out to be Dick Tracy paper. He asked me if I'd like to have it. I have been a Tracy nut since I was a kid, and I practically drooled all over myself telling him yes. I would <I>kill</B></I> to have it. So he sent it, and I took two sections and put them up as door decorations here in Ellison Wonderland. I saved the rest of the roll and tried to learn more about it; but the best I could do for <I>true</B></I> data was that, in fact, Chester Gould himself had done the original coloring for the template. Beyond that I've never seen -- or heard -- of another example of this exceptional Dick Tracy goodie. -- Harlan Ellison, 9 June 2003" There are a few tears on the extremities, which is to be expected on a piece this large and a little chipping on the edges. Other than that the colors are bright, with excellent graphics by Gould. This piece will thrill even the most jaded Dick Tracy collector. This unique piece measures 19" x 133" <B>Estimate: $500-up</B> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><!--<a name="PricesRealized"></a> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" bgcolor="#000000"> <tr> <td width="100%"> <table width="100%" border="0" cellspacing="1" cellpadding="3"> <tr> <td width="100%" bgcolor="#79735C"> <a name="PR"> <font face="arial" size="3" color="#FFFFFF"> <b>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</b> </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#F6F6ED"> No Prior Data Recorded </td> </tr> <tr> <td bgcolor="#FFFFFF"> <font face="arial" size="1""> PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
