Diaz del Castillo, Bernal. THE DISCOVERY AND CONQUEST OF MEXICO 1517-1521. Farrar, Sraus and Cudahy, New York. 1956. 8vo. xxxi, (2), 478 pages. Original black cloth, lettered in silver, green, protected jacket. Fine. Bernal Diaz, conquistador and author of this spectacular epic, served under Cortes through the entire Mexican campaign. His Discovery and Conquest of Mexico is the only accurately edited and translated work (there being in existence several corrupt versions), and it is basic source history, the material on which W. H. Prescott and others have leaned so heavily when writing of the Spanish conquest. It is also exciting, lusty and bloody. Diaz was with Cortes when he sank his ships, thus committing his party irrevocably to the conquest; he was close in the counsels of the leaders and was at hand when Montezuma was made a prisoner in his own palace. He fought in over one hundred battles and skirmishes against an enemy who made living sacrifices of their prisoners; cutting out their hearts, butchering their bodies, skinning their bearded faces. These things Diaz saw and wrote about; the result is a magnificent volume indispensable to historians and to readers who delight in sheer adventure. The present book was edited by Genaro Garcia from an exact copy of the original manuscript of Diaz' True History of the Conquest of New Spain, an account of the author's campaigns in Mexico and other countries. Extracts from Garcia's long introduction are printed in this volume, together with the commentary and notes of the translator, A. P. Maudslay. Lot weight: 2 lbs 1oz. Subject(s): Mexican History.
