His company records indicate he served thru at least 1883 when he was promoted to Sgt. Major. The diary begins on Friday, January 1st , 1864 and ends November 7th , 1864. The diary is well written and describes events and expenses. There is a cabinet photo of Judson Rust with his cavalry saber as a private.
