Indian novelist (1890–1936) considered to be the first successful Indian man of letters in the United States, who won the Newbery Medal in 1928; he committed suicide by hanging in 1936. ALS signed “D. G. Mukerji,” one page, 8 x 11, November 18, 1931. Letter about the term 'Jihadi,' which appeared in his 1926 mystery novel The Secret Listeners of the East. In full: "The word Jehadi that appears in The Secret Listeners of the East is derived from the word Jehad—Holy War of Islam. Jehadi is a crusader of Islam. The book Secret Listeners of the East is based on reports of the British Police officers who were engaged in British India during 1918–21 to track down Mohammadan nationalists of the violent school. Whether any secret society was named Jehadi I do not know." In fine condition, with small semicircles of discoloration to two corner tips. Accompanied by a small unsigned glossy photo of the author.
