Devil's Gate Mill Tax Assessment Receipt
State of Nevada, Lyon County assessed to Fair and Mackay (misspelled as "Mackey") of the Devil's Gate Mill supplies for fiscal year 1875. Assessed value set at $6000 with the tax issued at $171. Signed by Geo. Shaw. Printed by Times Print, Silver City, Nev. Two holes and folds present. Devil's Gate was said by J. Ross Browne to be unsafe for travel due to"inexorable imps" in 1860. Within a few years, the area would grow to become a vast ore producing region with mills, tunnels, and community buildings [REF: Paher, Nevada Ghost Towns and Mining Camps, 1973], though the mine is noted to have been further south in Silver City.
