Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) Apparent VF- 7.5 Slight (A) Off-white to white pages. Barely a year had gone by since Superman's introduction to the world, and the shock waves were just starting to reverberate off the walls of DC when Bob Kane walked into Vin Sullivan's office. After finding out what Siegel and Shuster were getting paid for Superman, Kane was determined to take a shot at the genre himself. Slaving over crude drawings that weekend, and with a huge assist from Bill Finger, Kane fleshed out what would become the antithesis of Superman. The Man of Steel was a bright figure, bombastic and cheerful, always seen during the day; Batman was a creature of the night, dark and menacing -- a tragic figure forced to battle crime out of revenge. This contrast proved a perfect balance at DC, which quickly built a universe around these two seminal figures, and watched as everyone else enviously copied them. To acquire a copy of Batman's first appearance doesn't just mean you own an expensive comic -- you own a piece of history, something that no one in the hobby takes lightly. Collectors buy mere pages of this book just to say they have Detective #27! Offered here is something a bit more...complete. Graded an Apparent VF- with very nice pages, this copy has a few tiny spots of black color touch on the spine, and a small piece of loose paper glued down above the top staple. There is no cleaning of any kind, or any other work to note. The book has great eye-appeal, exhibiting bright colors and sharp edges. An unrestored copy recently fetched $278,000, making this one very attractive for its price. Detective #27 is a book every serious Batman collector must own in his lifetime. Overstreet 2002 VF 8.0 value = $165,000. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
