Desirable and Rare Pre-War Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Bolt Action Rifle Chambered in the 7x57mm Mauser Cartridge

This example was manufactured in 1937. This Super Grade Model 70 rifle is chambered in the scarce 7x57mm Mauser cartridge and is marked on the barrel "7M/M". This chambering was only manufactured between 1937 and 1949 with reportedly less than 1,000 produced. The left side of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER/PROOF STEEL -MODEL 70- WINCHESTER-/-TRADE MARK - 7 M/M" ahead of the rear sight boss. The Winchester "W/P" oval proofmark is stamped on the left side of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The bolt is numbered to the gun on the underside, the safety is the typical "Pre-War" version and the receiver has the "cloverleaf" tang. The left receiver wall is marked "WINCHESTER/-TRADE MARK-" and the floor plate is marked "-SUPER GRADE-". The barrel has a beaded blade front sight on a stippled ramp (hood absent), the rear sight dovetail has a filler block installed and a Redfield peep sight has been mounted on the left rear of the receiver. The rifle is mounted with a one-piece checkered walnut pistol grip stock with ebony forend tip, Winchester grip cap, raised cheekpiece, checkered steel buttplate and quick release sling swivels.

Very fine. The barreled action retains 99% original blue finish with some minor muzzle wear and light handling marks. The trigger guard has a smooth gray patina with strong traces of dark original finish and some cold blue touchup. The floor plate retains 95% original blue finish with speckled flaking and a few minor scratches. The stock is excellent with a few minor dings and scratches along with crisp checkering. The markings remain crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. A very desirable Pre-War Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in the scarce and desirable 7x57mm Mauser caliber!
