Desirable Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a fine example of a Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine that was manufactured in 1876. The carbine has the standard 20 inch round barrel secured by two bands with the barrel fitted with the standard two-leaf pattern carbine rear sight that is marked with graduations for 100, 300 and 500 yards. The early style front sight is mounted on the front barrel band. The top of the barrel is marked "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860" in two lines between lower barrel band and the rear sight. It has the brass receiver with the saddle ring and staple mounted on the left sides. The script serial number is located behind the trigger. It is fitted with the small loop loading lever with the dished loading gate. It is fitted with the correct carbine forend and buttstock with the brass carbine buttplate and the sliding trap door, which holds the brass-tipped three-piece cleaning rod. The four-piece, steel, brass tipped cleaning rod is present in the butt trap. It has the blued barrel with oil-finished walnut stock and forend.

Fine condition with most of a brown patina finish on the barrel and magazine tube. The loading lever and hammer also show the same attractive brown patina overall with the middle section of the lower portion of the loading lever having an old, old repair. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with a 2 inch crack on the right side of the stock starting at the rear of the receiver. The brass receiver and side plates show their old, attractive mustard brown patina color overall with tight fitting side plates. A very nice looking, original Winchester Model 1866 SRC.
