Desirable Winchester 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine

This is a solid original example of a Winchester 1866 carbine that was manufactured in 1886. This carbine has the Fourth Model features which include: flared receiver at the junction with the forearm, less pronounced curve in the receiver profile near the hammer, iron carbine style buttplate and serial number located on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The carbine has the distinctive Model 1866 brass (gunmetal) frame, blue barrel, magazine and barrel bands and casehardened hammer, lever and trigger. The stock and forearm are straight grain, oil-finished American walnut. The block mounted steel blade front sight is located behind the upper barrel band. The late pattern folding leaf rear sight is graduated to 900 yards ("9") and marked "1873" near the top of the leaf. A staple fastened saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The iron buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top of the barrel is roll stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS NEW HAVEN. CT./ KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "44 R.F." is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the frame. "44 CAL" is stamped in script letters on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. The serial number "165704" is stamped on the lower tang.

Very good plus. The carbine is all original and has an attractive deep brown patina on the barrel and barrel bands, magazine, loading gate, hammer lever, trigger and buttplate. The receiver is in very good overall condition and has an attractive age patina. Receiver wear is limited to some scattered, minor scratches and handling marks and some scattered spots of age discoloration. The barrel and receiver markings are sharp. The lever latch is missing from the lower tang. The stock and forearm have an attractive aged patina and are in fine condition with scattered, minor handling and storage marks. This is a highly desirable example of a late production, Winchester Model 1866 carbine which has the desirable fresh "out of the attic" appearance!
