This is an example of a lever action Navy Pistol/Carbine that was manufactured by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company. The Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., manufactured an estimated 300 Navy Pistol/Carbines between 1855 and 1857. The pistol/carbine has a 16 1/2-inch barrel, a hole in the back strap for attachment of the carbine stock and a replaced knurled brass thumbscrew on the butt to tighten the stock. The pistol/carbine has the distinctive octagon barrel with integral magazine, brass frame and lever with round finger hole. The barrel/magazine has a blue finish, the hammer and lever are casehardened and the two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnished piano finish. The pistol has a brass cone front sight on the barrel and a dovetail mounted rear sight with elevation wheel on the receiver. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "THE VOLCANIC/REPEATING ARMS CO./PATENT NEW HAVEN, CONN. FEB. 14 1854". The serial number "313" is stamped on the right side of the lever, the left side of the butt and on the inside of both grips. All of the visible serial numbers match. Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., pistol/carbines are very rare.
BBL: 16 1/2 inch octagon
Stock:
Gauge: 41 Volcanic
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 313
Condition:
Fine. The pistol/carbine and retains 65% of the original blue finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel; the balance has faded to a dark patina. The barrel has some scattered minor scratches but the edges are sharp and the markings are crisp. The brass receiver is very good with an attractive mustard yellow patina and un-marred side plate edges. The receiver has a few light scratches and dents. The left side of the receiver has some small spots of pitting and discoloration in front of the side plate. The rear sight, trigger and cartridge elevator retain about 30% of the niter blue finish. Traces of case color are visible on the hammer. The lever has a dark brown patina. The grips are fine and retain 70% of the varnished piano finish. Wear is limited to light handling marks and some finish loss on the edges of the heels. This is a nice example of a rare Volcanic Arms Company Navy Pistol/Carbine.
