Desirable U.S. Winchester Model 1897 Slide Action Trench Shotgun with Bayonet and Scabbard

This is an early pre-WWII U.S. Army contract Winchester M97 Trench shotgun. These were heavily used in the early days of WWII, especially in the far east during jungle fighting, where they provided an excellent close combat weapons that was a favorite of U.S.M.C. The left side of the receiver is stamped with "U.S./Ordnance Bomb" proof" with a circled "WP" proof on top. The barrel has the standard two-line Winchester factory markings on the left side, followed by "2 3/4 chamber/CYL", with a US Ordnance bomb proof and circled "WP" proof on top of the barrel. The barrel is fitted with the early 6-row heat shield/handguard that has the bayonet adapter/lug and wire bail sling swivel on the front end. It is fitted with an 18 groove round walnut pump handle and low comb walnut pistol grip stock. The left side is stamped with a with a boxed "W.B." cartouche and it is fitted with a replacement Winchester marked checkered plastic buttplate. Length of pull is 13 3/8 inches. It is complete with a early British proofed, 1913 dated, Remington Pattern 14 bayonet with scabbard and a WWII style leather sling.

Very fine overall with 75% plus of the original blue finish with the balance a brown patina finish with wear and blue loss on the edges and high spots. The buttstock and pump handle are very good with nice original finish showing handling marks and light pressured dents in several areas. The bayonet and scabbard have been repainted black, and the sling is good. The heat shield/handguard is slightly bent outward in the middle, however it still looks good on the shotgun. Mechanically fine.
