Desirable U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle Date 1881

The series of rifle had the new style Buckhorn rear sight that allowed for a greater elevation out to 1,200 yards. The left rear area of the barrel is stamped with "V/P/Eagle head/P" proofs and the top of the barrel at the breech is stamped with the letter "R". The breechblock is marked "U.S./MODEL/1873" and the lock plate is marked with the Eagle/Shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" and is correctly fitted with a three-click tumbler. The rear sight is graduated on the side of the base with 1-5 (100-500 yards) with 6-12 (600-1200 yards) on the face of the ladder. It is correctly marked "R" for rifle at the top of the ladder. It has the smooth trigger and the two piece trigger guard bow and trigger plate. It has the standard walnut stock with a boxed, script "SWP/1881" cartouche on the left side and a single circled "P" proof behind the trigger guard. The buttplate has "US" on top of the tang.

Very fine with 90% of the original blue finish on the exposed metal components with the barrel and lock plate blue just startling to thin out in some areas. The breech block and breech plug both show 75% of their case colors with the balance a silvery patina color. The stock is also in very good condition with numerous light handling marks and dings on the sides and underside overall from handling and field use. The cartouche and firing proof are both sharp and clear with some minor handling marks over the cartouche. A very nice looking early Model 1879 Trapdoor rifle.
