Sharps Model 1874 Buffalo Rifle sold by the well-known Sharps dealer, Walter Cooper of Bozeman, Montana, prior to 1874. The rifle has a 27" heavy octagon barrel chambered for the Sharps .50, 2 1/2" cartridge. The top of the barrel barrel is roll-stamped with the first style legend: "SHARP'S RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD, CONN." that was used from 1871-1873. The top barrel flat behind the rear sight is stamped with "FROM", "W.COOPER" and "BOZEMAN M.T." in separate oval cartouches. "CALIBER 50" is stamped behind the dealer markings and "30" is stamped on the rounded portion of the barrel just ahead of the receiver. The barrel is fitted with a dovetail mounted knife blade front sight with brass blade and a R.S. Lawrence patent high notch folding rear sight. The receiver is fitted with factory double set triggers. The left side of the receiver is stamped; "C. SHARPS' PAT./SEPT. 12th 1848" in two lines. The serial number, "C53505" is located on the upper receiver tang, on the underside of the barrel beneath the forearm and on the inside of the forearm. All of the visible serial numbers match. The rifle has a walnut pistol grip stock with Army rifle style buttplate and a Schnabel forearm with metal tip. The buttplate and the forearm both have checkered panels. The barrel is blued and the receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have a casehardened finish.
BBL: 27 inch octagon
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 50 Sharps
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: C53505
Condition: Very good. The rifle retains traces the original blue and casehardened finish. The barrel has a even, dark brown patina with smooth surfaces and crisp edges. The barrel markings are deep and clear. The bore is bright. The barrel may have been shortened by Walter Cooper from 30" to 27" to make the rifle easier to carry on horseback. The receiver has a mottled, dark brown, patina; there is some scattered, light, pitting on toe side of the lock plate. The oil-finished walnut stock and forearm are in very good condition. The checkered panels show minor handling wear and the forearm tip appears to be a period replacement. The stock and forearm are have minimal handling marks. This is a rare example of an early production Sharps Model 1874 Buffalo Rifle with markings from a well known Montana Sharps dealer.
