Desirable Rare Documented Factory Engraved Blackpowder Colt Single Action Army Frontier Six Shooter Revolver with Factory Letter

Manufactured in 1880. The left side of the barrel has an oval panel acid-etched "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER". The revolver has a nickel plated finish with niter blue frame screws and a one-piece ivory grip. The revolver is factory engraved with Germanic style scrollwork on a punch dot background. The engraving coverage is approximately the equivalent of the later Colt "B" engraving. The engraving was probably executed by Master Engraver Cuno A. Helfricht or his shop. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "COLT"S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The barrel legend is surrounded by a panel composed of wavy lines and punch dots. The caliber "44" is stamped on the underside of the barrel. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt three date, three line patent marking in an engraved panel with double line borders. "44CF" is stamped on the left side of the trigger guard bow. The assembly number "1010" is located on the inside of the loading gate. The full serial number "53117" is stamped on the bottom of the fame, trigger guard, and back strap. The partial serial number "3117" is stamped on the side of the cylinder. A partial serial number "3088" is stamped on the underside of the barrel beneath the ejector shroud. The revolver is documented by a Colt factory letter and was featured in a issue of Gun Report. Both the Colt letter and the Gun Report article accompany the revolver.

Extremely fine. The revolver retains 80% of the original nickel plated finish. At least 95% of the delicate acid-etched "FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER" marking remains. There is finish wear and light pitting on the forward edges of the frame and top strap. The cylinder has 75% of the nickel plated finish with pitting on the face and in the cylinder flutes. Some of the plated finish has flaked from the sides of the hammer. The serial numbers and the markings on the barrel and frame are sharp. The impeccably executed scrollwork and punch dot engraving is crisp. The ivory grip has yellowed with age but remains very fine, showing a shallow chip and several very minor age stress lines on the right side of the grip and on the butt. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is a much sought after example of a scarce factory engraved blackpowder Colt Single Action "Frontier Six Shooter" revolver.
