Desirable Late Production U.S. Springfield Model 1898 Krag Bolt Action Rifle With History

This rifle is accompanied by a typed historical providence from the grandson of the original owner of this rifle. The letter states that this rifle was originally purchased at a Government auction by Carney M. Layne, a prominent Attorney, Legislator and Circuit Court Judge in West Virginia circa 1905-1915. The rifle remained with that family for the next two more generations (three generations total) being prominently displayed and admired in the law offices of the Layne family. It was finally sold to a collector in 2001. This example was manufactured toward the end of the production in 1902. Standard left side receiver marking, integral front sight base with the pinned blade front sight and an adjustable ladder rear sight graduated from "2 to 20", milled barrel bands, trigger guard and buttplate and mounted with a full length walnut stock and handguard. The stock has a boxed script, "JSA/1903" cartouche on the left side and a single circled script "P" proof in the pistol grip area.

Extremely fine with 90% plus of the original blue finish with fading and thinning on the receiver and side plate mixed with some brown patina on the barrel bands and trigger guard and a gray patina on the buttplate. The stock and handguard have a medium brown matching color with a clear cartouche and "P" proof. The sides and under sides of the buttstock shows some minor light handling marks and scratches from being displayed over the years. A very fine example of a U.S. Model 1898 Krag Rifle with historical provenance.
