Desirable Korean Conflict Springfield M1C Garand Sniper Rifle with Matching Scope Base and CMP Docum
This is an exceptional example of an original WWII Springfield Armory M1C Sniper rifle produced in late 1944 that was sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) in 1997-99 timeframe. This rifle was rebuilt for the Korean war and at the time of this CMP auction it was rumored that the USMC turned over approximately 50-100 M1C rifles to the CMP as part of that sales program. This rifle could be one of those rifles as it has the typical USMC, heavy rough textured parkerized metal finish with a deep green colored parkerized with only a single uncircled "P" proof on the walnut stock in the pistol grip area. Both of these are typical features of overhauled M1C rifles coming from the Philadelphia Ordnance Depot that supplied weapons to the USMC. Unlike the US Army overhauled rifles which show a smooth parkerized finish with a fully cartouche stock. Additionally it has been rumored that USMC issued M1C sniper generally fell into the 3,500,000 to 3,650,000 serial number ranges, again supporting that this could be a USMC M1C rifle. This rifle is complete with an original WWII blued Griffin & Howe M1C sniper mount, with the correct G&H markings on top between the rings, that is correctly serial numbered (3,597,631) on the side, the original WWII matching scope base, numbered on the underside of the base (3,534,585) as noted in a recent issue of the Garand Collector's Club magazine. An original M84 sniper scope (still packaged and sealed in the original foil pack), an original heavy canvas scope case in the Army pack, a HART flash hider, MRT-52 leather lace on cheek piece, a GI canvas sling still in the Army pack and the original CMP documentation, data sheets and shipping box. The receiver has the standard M1 receiver markings over serial number, 3534,585, and the barrel is marked "S-A / 9-51" indicating a early Korean war rebuilt (consistent with the fact that 99.9% of all M1C were rebuilt after WWII) and which probably saw actual sniper service. It has correct Springfield marked parts, as follows; trigger housing is marked " D28290-16-SA", the trigger guard is unmarked, and the bolt is marked "D28287-12SA / S-B3", operating rod is marked " D35382-SA" (with modified cut). The rear sight set and gas cylinder are as follows; elevation knob marked "HN" with the windage knob marked "DRC" with the late WWII/postwar production wide based version with the WWII round top gas cylinder lock with the late four slot gas plug. It has the correct all walnut stock and hand guard set with an excellent matching brown color on all three parts.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30-06
Finish: parkerize
Grips:
Serial Number: 3534585
Condition: Near mint as arsenal refurbished overall with 99% of the Korean war era heavy rough textured, green parkerized finish with one small spot of finish loss on the lower heel of the receiver. The original G&H M1C mount retains 98% original blue finish with minor edge wear. The stock and hand guards with a nice matching medium brown color with an excellent smooth appearance overall with just a couple of very minor handling marks. As noted there is only a single "P" proof in the pistol grip. The gas cylinder is all in excellent condition and as note most of the remaining original parts are still in their original depot bags so they should all be in excellent condition. We assume the scope has 99% of it blued finish with excellent optics since it still sealed up. The shipping box is in fine condition. A rare and desirable M1C sniper that is undoubtedly original.
