Desirable Inscribed Sharps Model 1874 Long Range Single Shot Creedmoor Style Target Rifle

This is a fine example of a scarce early Sharps M1874 Creedmoor style single shot rifle. These rifles were a highly refined, continuation of the original Civil War era Sharps rifles and carbines, that were adopted for use in the new game of long range target shooting. This fine example was produced circa 1875, and features a light weight 32 inch octagon barrel. Fitted with a long range, tang mounted peep sight with an unusual, narrow globe front sight that is equipped with the windgauge adjustment, a spirit level and removable front sight inserts. The top of the barrel has no provisions for a rear sight. The side of the rear sight base is numbered "54127" and staff is numbered "54197", but they have been together for a long time! The top of the barrel has the one line marking of "SHARPS RIFLE CO. HARTFORD CONN." with "CALIBER 44" marked in front of the receiver. The serial number is stamped on the upper tang, under the rear sight base and the side of the rear sight base is numbered "54127". Staff is numbered "54197", but they have been together for a long time. The left side of the receiver has the two line C. SHARPS PAT./SEPT 12TH 1848". It is fitted with a deluxe checkered forend with pewter nose cap and a checkered, pistol grip stock. The right side of the stock has been fitted with a small silver presentation plate that is engraved "J.N.WINSLOW/Pokeepsie N.Y.". The name plate has been over stamped in large letters "A.G. HULL" and also stamped on the left side of the upper stock area. Interestingly enough this rifle has a flat steel grip cap and a deluxe two- piece shotgun style buttplate. The buttplate has a steel reinforced heel and toe area with the center section of the butt finely factory checkered, both features very unique on an early rifle. This beautiful rifle has the blued barrel and color casehardened receiver, lever and breechblock.

Fine overall with 40% of the blue finish on the barrel with traces of the case colors on the receiver and loading lever. The fine stock and forend both have a protective varnish overcoat with nice sharp and distinct checkering on both the pistol grip and forend areas. The checkering in both areas does show some light handling marks and there are a few minor scratches and light handling marks on the sides of the buttstock. A very nice early Sharps Long Range Target rifle.
