Desirable Factory Panel Scene Engraved Winchester Model 1897 Pigeon Gun Slide Action Shotgun

This beautiful example of a Factory Engraved Winchester Model 1897 Pigeon Gun that was manufactured in 1905. The left side of the receiver is engraved with a live pigeon shoot scene of a man sitting at a table choosing which box to open, a man standing after just firing a shot at a pigeon in the air and there is a man crouched down handling the retrieving dog with five dead birds behind him. The scene is so detailed you can see the shot cloud about to hit the bird and there are two other men with shotguns in the background. The right side shows a rolling hills scene with a man holding a Model 1897 with a dog retrieving the first dead bird, a second dead bird is laying on the ground, a third bird is falling out of the air and a fourth bird is about to be hit with a shot cloud. The top of the receiver on both sides at the front are engraved with a rose and both sides at the rear are engraved with a four leaf clover. There is a pigeon engraved on the rear of the receiver under the hammer. There are flourishes of floral scroll engraving on the sides of the receiver, on the trigger guard and on the bottom of the receiver. The breechblock is engraved "PIGEON GUN" and has floral scroll on the side and bottom. The top of the receiver is hand matted and the top of the barrel has three lines of matting with a single nickel bead at the muzzle. The barrel is choked full and has a 2 3/4 inch chamber. Mounted on a nicely figured, multi-point checkered round walnut forearm and straight grip stock with contrasting diamonds inlaid on both sides of the wrist and a checkered hard rubber buttplate. Length of pull is 13 1/2 inches. There is a similar example pictured in "THE WINCHESTER BOOK" by George Madis on page 533.

Very fine, 60% plus of the original blue finish remains overall with high edge, handling and cycling wear along with scattered dings and scratches. The engraving remains mostly sharp and well defined. There is a smooth mottled silvery gray patina on the balance with some areas of brown discoloration. The wood is also very fine with scattered minor dings, scratches and worn checkering. Mechanically excellent. An attractive and rare example of a factory panel scene engraved Model 1897 that would enhance any Winchester collection!
