Desirable Early Winchester Model 1890 Casehardened Solid Frame Slide Action Rifle in .22 Short

This example was manufactured in March of 1891. Only the first 15,552 of the almost 750,000 Winchester Model 1890s were manufactured with a solid frame. There is a German silver blade front sight and a fixed rear sight on the 24 3/8 inch octagon barrel with the first style markings of "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.NEW HAVEN.CONN.U.S.A.-" on the top center of the barrel. The caliber "22 SHORT" is stamped at the breech end of the barrel. This example does not have the Winchester "W/P" proofmarks that were introduced circa 1905. Mounted on a 12 groove round walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a curved steel buttplate.

Fine, 60% of the original blue finish remains with some high edge and cycling wear along with scattered minor scratches and dings. There are a couple small areas of pitting that have been cleaned with an abrasive. The casehardened components retain 20% of the bright original case colors with a mostly smooth mottled gray/brown patina with some scratches and dings. The buttstock is very fine with scattered scratches and dings. The forearm is a refinished replacement. Mechanically excellent.
