Desirable Early First Year Production Colt Model 1851 Navy Revolver with Squareback Trigger Guard
This is a nice example of an early first year production Colt First Model 1851 Navy squareback trigger guard revolver. The first 1,000 Model 1851 Navy revolvers were made with the square back trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked with the early Colt "NEW YORK CITY" address without the hyphen between the "NEW" and "YORK". The left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the Texas / Mexican naval scene as well as "COLT'S PATENT 884" . The complete matching serial number is marked on the loading lever, barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The wedge is un-numbered, there is a small "T" stamped (laying horizontal) on the right trigger guard shoulder and a small "K" just ahead of the trigger guard bow. Brass pin front sight, hammer notch rear sight and fitted with smooth one piece walnut grips. The Model 1851 Navy was the most popular revolver Colt produced in the medium size and power range, and this early example exemplifies the model best.
