I have one of these available--in excellent condition and a prime example of this durable and lovely pattern.<p>

(For a bit of history: Franciscan China is a product of the original Gladding, McBean & Co., founded in 1875 to manufacture sewer tile in Glendale, California. Franciscan dinnerware lines began production in 1934 under the auspices of Frederic and Mary Grant, pottery artists and producers from Weller Pottery. They created or influenced many of the best loved Franciscan dinnerware designs, including Desert Rose, well into the mid-20th century.<p>
From its very beginning, Franciscan Pottery exhibited the bright colors and style of the American Southwest. Its name is a tribute to the Franciscan monks who lived in California missions, and its designs incorporate the style of Mexican folk pottery. Franciscan helped start the "California Style" of American ceramics and used Spanish-inspired names such as Montecito and Coronado. As the company grew, it manufactured a wide product line, including art pottery, garden pottery, and decorative tiles.<p>
The Grants released the Desert Rose dinnerware pattern along with the Franciscan Apple dinnerware pattern in 1941. In the six decades since its initial production, Desert Rose has become one of Franciscan China?s most popular dinnerware lines?as well as possibly the most popular American dinnerware pattern.
