Emily (or Amelia) Scobel was a professional model at the Slade in London,
painted by Augustus John and Orpen among others (see note on the following lot).
Writing of Orpen’s association with Scobel, Bruce Arnold has noted "her broad
peasant face, strong jaw and clearly defined features", which gave her "an
earthy, direct appeal". O’Brien possibly met Scobel whilst a student at the
Slade in the mid-1890s, or later through his friendship with the Slade lecturers
Steer and Tonks (he shared a Chelsea studio in 1899 with Tonks).
