The Deperdussin Monocoque World Speed Record flight in Chicago, 1912, was a landmark achievement in early aviation, demonstrating the revolutionary potential of streamlined aircraft design. Piloted by Jules Védrines, the Deperdussin Monocoque—featuring a lightweight, aerodynamic plywood fuselage—set a world speed record of approximately 106 mph (171 km/h) during an international meet. The event, held in the Chicago area as part of major aviation exhibitions, showcased the transition from fragile biplanes to more advanced, high-performance aircraft and marked a significant step toward modern aeronautical engineering.
