Denton, Moths and Butterflies of the U.S.
Sherman Foote Denton, As Nature Shows Them: Moths and Butterflies of the United States East of the Rocky Mountains, in Three Volumes, (Boston: J.B. Millet, 1900), x, 161;xi, 163-268; 268-361, 4to (7.5 x 10), copy number 475 of 500 copies, with spectacular hand-colored direct transfers of moth and butterflies on tipped in plates and about 400 additional photographic illustrations. From the preface-"The colored plates, or Nature Prints, used in the work, are direct transfers from the insects themselves; that is to say, the scales of the wings of the insects are transferred to paper while the bodies are printed from engravings and afterward colored by hand. I have had to make over fifty thousand of these transfers for the entire edition, not being able to get anyone to help me who would do the work as I desired it done. I will say, however, that there was never a laborer more in love with his work". The book is ex-library with the usual stamps and marks. The bindings are weak with loose pages, but all three volumes appear to be complete. Fair.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
