Denise is a noteworthy piece of French literature from the 19th century that combines wit, romance, and social observation—all of which are hallmarks of Scholl's writing. Scholl was renowned for his keen wit and ability to depict the subtleties of Parisian society in his work as a journalist, playwright, and novelist. Beautiful watercolor images by Grivaz and engravings by Arents decorate this volume. The full leather binding, designed by Roques of 56 High Holborn, has a nice gold gilt decorated spine with delicate raised bands and floral designs. Beautiful gold dentelle borders encircle the marbled end papers. It shows good condition overall with wear present from its age and use over the years, but no major signs of damage is noted. Wear present to the spine and foxing noted to the interior pages. It measures 9 1/4" L x 6 1/4" W x 1/2" D and weighs 12 ounces.
