Demuth Tobacconist's Zinc Indian Figure. Wm. Demuth & Co. Zinc Cigar Store Figure, "Indian Hunter" model. Rare with rifle, this version of Demuth's Indian Hunter (No. 70 in Demuth's 1875 Catalogue) stands wearing a fringed tunic over fringed leggings, a pair of peace medals, a cape over his shoulders, and a feathered headdress. The figure holds a rifle in his right hand with his knife and pipe at the ready. The price for such a figure in 1875 is listed in the Catalogue as $80. Old, though not original, paint. 66" tall with the base and 22" wide. From, “Artists in Wood: American Carvers of Cigar-Store Indians, Show Figures and Circus Wagons” by Frederick Fried, 1970, page 53, figure 36: “Indian Hunter No. 70. A medium-sized metal figure in full attire with a voluminous cloak reaching to back of the base. The gun held in his left hand was often appropriated and later replaced with an old cheap Civil War musket. This figure is rarely seen and only one is known to exist – in a private collection.”.
