Deluxe Special Order Winchester Model 1886 .50/110 Express Rifle with Factory Letter

This is an extremely nice example of a Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe Express Rifle manufactured in 1890. The rifle has a casehardened frame, forearm cap, hammer, lever and shotgun buttplate. The half-octagon barrel, half magazine, bolt and loading gate are blue. The barrel is equipped with a Lyman Hunting Front Sight with colored insert and a sporting rear sight with serrated edges and sliding elevator. The top barrel flat is marked "- MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight and "50 EX" at the breech. The upper tang is marked "-MODEL 1886-" and the lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates in two lines behind the trigger with the serial number between the tang screws. Mounted with a checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with a steel shotgun buttplate. The accompanying Cody Firearms Museum letter verifies the rifle 50/110 caliber, half-octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, sporting rear sight and half-magazine, and that it was shipped from the warehouse on August 13, 1890.

BBL: 26 inch half octagon
Stock: walnut
Guage: 50-110
Finish: blue/casehardened

Extremely fine. The rifle retains 75% of the original blue and 60% casehardened finish. The blue finish on the round portion of the barrel is thin and there is light edge wear on the octagon portion of the barrel. The bolt retains nearly all of the original deep blue finish. The blue on the loading gate is thinning. Considerable case colors remain on the top and sides of the frame and the sides of the hammer and lever. The casehardened finish on the forearm cap, frame, hammer and loading lever are fading to a smooth silver. The case colors on the buttplate have smooth faded to a gray patina. The markings are sharp. The wood is very fine showing minimal handling wear. The checkering has been professionally re-cut and the stock and forearm have been carefully reoiled. This is a very fine example of a scarce and very desirable special order Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe .50/110 Express rifle.
