Manufacturer: Marlin Firearms Co Model: 97
This is a beautiful example of a scarce deluxe version of the desirable Marlin Model "97" lever action rifle. These rifles were actually based on the successful Model 92 rifle but were made with an improved takedown screw. They were manufactured from 1897 to 1917 with this example being a rare deluxe version that featured extra fancy/deluxe walnut buttstock and forend, both with factory checkering. The top barrel flat is marked in two line with the Marlin Firearms, New Haven address and patent dates. The left rear side of the barrel is marked "22 S-L & LR" flanked by arrows on either end. The top tang is marked "MARLIN/MODEL 97" with the serial number located on the front underside of the receiver. This rifle has the second pattern receiver with the top of the receiver correctly drilled and tapped with three holes, one for the cartridge guide and the other two for the Marlin/Hepburn rear sight, (not included). The barrel is fitted with a Marbles marked adjustable sporting rear sight with an unmarked ivory bead lyman type front sight.
BBL: 20 1/4 inch octagon
Stock: walnut checkered
Gauge: 22 SLLR
Finish: blue casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: A6002
Condition:
Fine as period modified with 95% of the original blue on the shortened barrel and magazine tube with 75% plus of the original casehardened finish on the receiver showing fading on both sides. The refinished stock and forend are both fine with a beautiful fancy woodgrain pattern. The checkering on the forend is crisp with some very minor handling marks. The checkering on the pistol grips has been non-professionally recut. The markings are clear and sharp, however the barrel has been shortened to its current length with the front sight nicely reinstalled on the barrel. Still a very nice example of a scarce deluxe Marlin Model 97 lever action rifle.
