Deluxe Marlin Model 1894 Lever Action Carbine with Inscription

Marlin Model 1894 carbine with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The letter describes Marlin Model 1894 serial number 128420 as "Carbine, Caliber: 38, Barrel Length: 20 inches" with "Pistol grip stock". The letter further states that the carbine was shipped from the factory on December 12, 1896. The consignor states that this is one of only two Marlin Model 1894 carbines known to have been manufactured with a pistol grip stock. The left side of the receiver is engraved "Mabel C. Bernard" in Old English letters. The consigner notes state that Mabel Bernard was a trick shooter who performed with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show around 1900. The carbine has blue finish with casehardened hammer, lever and buttplate. The forearm and pistol grip stock are fancy grain walnut with a high polish piano finish and fine checkered panels. The barrel has an Express front sight with colored bead mounted in a dovetail behind the barrel band and a 900 yard folding leaf rear sight. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO., NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. -/PAT'D OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889, AUG. 1. 1893" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "38-40" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "-MARLIN SAFETY-" is roll-stamped on the top of the receiver with foliate devices at either end. The upper tang is roll-stamped "MODEL/1894" in two lines. The serial number "128420" is stamped across the bottom of the receiver.

Fine, the carbine retains 60% of the original blue finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. The barrel bands have a blue-brown patina. Most of the blue finish is present on the sides and top of the receiver, the bolt, bottom of the receiver in front of the lever and high points show handling wear and have a silver-gray patina. Most of the case colors are present on the hammer and left side of the lever; the bottom and right side of the lever have a mottled silver patina. The case colors on the buttplate have faded to a dull gray with traces of age discoloration. The stock and forearm are both fine and retain 70% of the original piano finish. The checkered panels show light-moderate handling wear. The forearm has extensive scattered minor dents on the rear. This is a fine example of a Deluxe Inscribed Marlin Model 1894 carbine with rare pistol grip stock.
