Deerlodge Horsehair Bridle with Montana History
Polychrome in red, pink, purple, black, orange, green, yellow & turquoise with four rounded headbands, flat cheeks. Split reins, 12 natural hair tassels, horse and elk pictorial rosettes with perimeter hitching. Original hardware store port bit, curb strap, red celluloid ring. Unused, slight fading, otherwise fine condition, c. 1920s. PROVENANCE: Bridle belonged to the grandmother of the consignor’s husband, who was born in 1890 in Lewiston, Montana. She was named after the Judith Basin in central Montana where her family operated a large sheep ranch. She married a man who became the treasurer of the Anaconda Copper Co. A state prisoner made this and, as she was told – gave it as a gift. Lot includes photocopies of the owner, the family ranch, and extensive family genealogy.
