This is hitched horsehair headstall and reins made in the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. This piece features "Aces & 8's" woven into the headstall. Known as the "Dead Man's Hand", Aces and 8's was the poker hand that famed lawman and gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was gunned down in Deadwood, South Dakota in 1876. This piece was made by a Death Row inmate from the prison. It has been in a privately held collection since it was made. The horsehair headstall and reins are in very good condition. The headstall measures 19" long and the reins are 77" long.
