DEEP-SEA MANGANESE NODULE WITH FISH TOOTH

160 29' South, 1450 33'West
In spite of their widespread occurrence in the oceans of this planet, as well as perennial talk about mining them, manganese nodules are rarely seen by anyone besides marine scientists. Most are in research collections. This example of the type is even more unique due to its having formed around a fish tooth (species unidentified). It was recovered during dredging operations conducted by the R/V Horizon on the Downwind Expedition in 1957/1958 at a depth of 1270 meters. It was given to Dr. Ed David, in 1980, by the scientist who collected it: Bill Nierenberg. Dr. David was Director of the White House Office of Science & Technology from 1970-1973. The tooth is about ¾ of an inch and the overall nodule measures 1 ½ x 1 1/8 x 5/8 of an inch. It bears Dr. David's collection number: 78A.
Ex Ed David Collection

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
