The term “Imari porcelain” is used for Japanese hard-paste porcelain produced in the town of Arita on the island of Kyushu, where porcelain was first successfully produced in 1616. This porcelain was so similar to the especially high-quality Chinese kind, that the seven hundred year old monopoly was broken.
