Neatly penned ADS, signed “William Ellery,” one page both sides, 6.25 x 7.5, no date [after 1770]. A docket on the adjacent leaf (now separated) describes the document as “Extract of a paragraph from the Will of George Wanton Esq., deceased.” In part: “My Will is, and I do hereby order and appoint That the Residue and Remainder of my estate…be equally divided by my Executors herein after named between my said Wife Abigail Wanton and my Children Elizabeth, Abigail, Edward, George, William, Benjamin and Martha; And I likewise order and appoint that my said Executor shall immediately receive the share, part and portion of each child, and to let it at interest for his and her benefit, and behoof to defray the charges of his, her, and their bringing up and educating, which I order and desire may be done in the best manner that can be obtained here….” Ellery began practicing law in 1770, providing the likely earliest date for the document. In very good condition, with scattered toning, some heavier, pencil notes to second page, and faint show-through of ink.
