Declaration Signer Robert Morris Document Signed "Robt. Morris" on verso, one page, 7.5" x 4.25", dated May 8, 1795, Morris, prominent Signer of the Declaration of Independence representing Pennsylvania and financier of the American Revolution was placed in debtors prison following the war when his ill fated North American Land Company failed. As soldiers returned home from the war they were paid in land (thus debasing the value of Morris's land holdings). Financial Instruments between Morris and his partner Nicholson, are particularly desirable as they are at the heart of the Morris story. Notes of this type were predominant instruments of evidence at the trial leading to his conviction. In the present instrument, Nicholson agrees to pay Morris twenty-five hundred dollars in three years. Morris and Nicholson, in conjunction with James Greenleaf, formed the company in 1795. A minor creditor put Morris in jail for three and a half years. Washington had Morris released but his sacrifice for the revolutionary cause was never rewarded. Show through from Morris' signature through body of text, rough bottom edge, vertical folds and wrinkles, else fine condition.
