Lawyer, jurist, legislator, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence from New Jersey. DS, signed “Rich Stockton Atty,” one page both sides, 7.75 x 12.5, dated in the text February 10, 1764. Legal brief regarding the case between James Stoward and Nathan Beakes “to render unto him two hundred pounds…which to him knows from him unjustly obtained and whereupon…Nathan by Richard Stockton his attorney ….” In very good condition, with a few small separations along fragile intersecting folds, light toning, and show-through from writing on reverse. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Stockton’s autograph material into the “very rare” category among the Signers—an echelon second only to that occupied by the virtually unobtainable Gwinnett and Lynch. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
