Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Pennsylvania (1742–1798). In 1789, he became one of the original nine justices appointed by Washington to the Supreme Court. Third-person ADS, one page, 7.5 x 3, September 4, 1773. Promissory note in Wilson’s hand reads, in full: “Rec’d of James Wilson the Sum of Sixteen pounds 10 s. Curr’t Money of Pennsylvania in lieu of Ten pounds Sh. 9 for 200 acres of Land on the East side of the N.E. Branch of Susq[uehann]a in a small rapid run opposite to Toby’s Cabbin [sic] in North…to be Surveyed to him by w[hic]h the first Inst’t For ye: Hon[orable] Prop[rieto]r / £16.10.0 Currency.” Also signed at the conclusion by Edmund Physick. Document is inlaid to a slightly larger off-white sheet. In very good condition, with several vertical folds, one through a single letter of signature, small hole affecting a single letter of text, and scattered toning and soiling.
