Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Georgia (1741–1804) who later served as that state’s chief justice, governor, and senator. Partly-printed DS, signed “Geo. Walton,” one page, 7.5 x 12, September 13, 1784. Legal document in which the state of Georgia seeks action against two residents of Chatham County. In part: “The Defendants William O’Bryan and Raymond Deiners are hereby required personally, or by their Attorney, to be and appear before the Justices of the Superior Court, to be held in and for the County of Chatham on the first Tuesday in October next, then and there to answer the Plaintiff’s Demands in an Action of Debt and so forth, to his Damage two hundred and Eighteen pounds Specie, as, in Default of such Appearance, the said Justices will proceed as to Justice shall appertain.” Signed vertically in black ink by Walton, and also signed by Savannah’s last president Samuel Strirk. Show-through from docketing and endorsements on reverse, partial separations along horizontal folds, one through a single letter of signature, and scattered light toning, otherwise fine condition.
