Signer of the Declaration of Independence from Massachusetts (1744–1814) who later served as vice president under James Madison. His name entered the language as a result of his support of politically advantageous redistricting, which became known as “gerrymandering.” Ink signature, “E. Gerry,” with an elaborate paraph, on an off-white irregularly cut 7.5 x 2 slip, clipped from a larger document. In fine condition, with light overall toning, two tiny holes beneath the signature, and light show-through from writing on reverse. Pre-certified John Reznikoff/PSA/DNA and RRAuction COA.
