Signer of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina (1749–1800). Handwritten endorsement, signed “Ed. Rutledge Atty,” on an off-white 3.25 x 2.25 slip, clipped from a larger legal document, dated July 3 [1787?]. In full: “I appear for the Defs. in this action.” In fine condition, with light show-through from text and writing on reverse. In his 1995 reference History Comes to Life, Kenneth Rendell places Rutledge’s autograph material into the “scarce” category among the Signers.
