The content of this letter regards exchange rates of foreign currency. It reads in part, "<I>…Not receiving from you or from the Collr. of Providence, the information I wanted relative to the rate at which the money of Denmark, Sweden, and Norway should be estimated, I wrote to the Collr. of Boston and Charlestown, and now give you a copy of his letter. The Big dollar of Denmark, Sweden and Norway is a silver currency and always estimated at 100 cents. The Banco dollar is fixed for the current Dollar by the Bank & those for Denmark & Sweden are here taken at 75 cents…</B></I>" William Ellery was a Declaration of Independence signer representing Rhode Island, he wrote this letter as customs collector of Rhode Island. This letter is a great look at how money was exchanged and traded at the turn of the 19th century. The letter is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; the edges are slightly rounded and worn. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
