<B>Declaration Signer William Ellery Autograph Letter Signed</B></I> "<I>William Ellery</B></I>". One page, [Newport], August 13, 1794, to District Attorney Ray Greene. A letter from Ellery as customs collector of Newport, a job he held from 1790 until his death in 1820, in part: "<I>...Two cases have occurred which require you should be at Newport. -- You will therefore I hope be here as soon as your business will admit...</B></I>" Ellery signed the Declaration of Independence as a representative of Rhode Island. He also was a member of the Continental Congress 1776-1785. This letter is written on strong laid paper and is in generally fine condition. There is a hole near his signature from the original wax seal, the integral address leaf is present and also in Ellery's hand. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
