<B>Declaration Signer Thomas McKean Document Signed as Pennsylvania Governor</B></I> "Tho M:Kean". One page, partly printed, vellum, 20.5" x 12", [Lancaster], July 6, 1803. A warrant for 321-acre tract of land in Luzerne County called "Monmouth" paid for by Samuel Polk, and issued to James Donatianus Le Ray de Chaumont. This grantee, known in America as James Le Ray, was the son of Jacques-Donatien Le Ray, a French friend of Benjamin Franklin who used his influence on King Louis XVI to gain support for the American Revolution, without which might have had a different outcome. James Le Ray settled in America, became a citizen and, again, working with the French government, lent support to the United States during the War of 1812. The towns of Le Ray, New York and Chaumont, New York are named after him. This document is in about Very Fine condition; expected folds, excellent and complete Pennsylvania paper seal on the front with two additional paper seals on the verso along with the docketing information.
