Declaration Signer John Witherspoon Autograph Letter Signed "Jno Witherspoon". One page, 7.75" x 6.75", Tusculum [Princeton, New Jersey], September 16, 1790. It begins, "Accordg to my promise of Yesterday's letter I send the Introduction as I have drawn it up. There was very much Difficulty in determining some particulars..." Witherspoon signed the Declaration as a representative from New Jersey and was the only clergyman to sign it. He was president of the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) during the War of Independence when the campus was nearly destroyed and Witherspoon was responsible for its rebuilding. He is one of the most elusive of all signers so don't let this opportunity pass you by. Good condition; separation at the fold repaired by professional linen backing, missing lower left corner repaired affecting no writing, staining at the fold affects the signature only slightly. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
