Declaration Signer John Hancock Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.25" x 2.5", Boston, September 15, 1767. A receipt, in full: "Rec'd of Ezekiel Williams Esq. by hand, of Capt. Peter Burnham Twenty four pounds six shillings on acct--- £24.6.0" The Ezekiel Williams mentioned might possibly be Ezekiel Williams Jr. of Hartford, a postmaster and insurance underwriter, and also the son-in-law of Oliver Ellsworth.

Hancock's signature was the first to be placed on the Declaration of Independence as Continental Congress President and his is the largest signature on it. It is possibly the most recognizable autograph in the world to this day. Many people use the term "John Hancock" as a slang term for signature. A Hancock autograph is the centerpiece of any autograph collection and this is a particularly bold example with his well-known paraph beneath. The document has a bit of dampstaining on the right side but otherwise is very good. Matted with a 19th century steel engraving and framed to an overall size of 17" x 23". A beautiful ensemble!
