December 11, 1865-Dated Civil War Period, Partly-Printed Document, Oath of Allegiance, Wythe County, Virginia, Very Fine.
This original Partly-Printed Document on period wove white paper measures about 8.5” x 3.5”, 1 page, Wythe County, Virginia. Being a signed Oath of Allegiance by R.W. Sanders following the conclusion of the Civil War. He swears “that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Laws made in pursuance thereof, as the Supreme Law of the land...” Docket on the blank reverse reads, in full: “R.W. Sanders Affidavit filed 11th Dec. 1865.” A rare Virginia specialized Post Civil War Oath of Allegiance.
After the Civil War many white Virginians could not vote because they had supported the Confederacy. In June 1865, the General Assembly of Virginia restored Voting Rights to some of those men, but the Federal government required those who had supported the Confederacy to take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States, or obtain a Presidential Pardon, before they could regain the Suffrage.
