As US secretary of state from 1961–1969, he supported US military involvement in Vietnam. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, The University of Georgia letterhead, November 4, 1991. In part: “In his campaign in 1964 Senator Goldwater made vague references to the possible use of atomic bombs and nuclear material which frightened a great many people. After the election of 1964, the North Vietnamese began to move their regiments and divisions of their regular forces into South Vietnam and threatened to cut South Vietnam in half through the highland area. This posed a completely new problem to President Johnson which President Kennedy had not had to face…Both Kennedy and Johnson were well versed in foreign affairs although Johnson habitually made deprecating references to himself in the foreign policy field. The most important single thing which can be said about this post war era is that we have now put behind us more than 46 years since a nuclear weapons [sic] has been fired in anger. President Kennedy brought us successfully through the Cuban missile crisis, which was the most dangerous crisis in human history. Most accounts of the Cuban missile crisis leave out the role played by Vice President Lyndon Johnson. He had many private talks with President Kennedy during that crisis and helped President Kennedy remain calm despite the deadly character of the crisis itself.” In fine condition, with three tiny dings along the right side.
