A letter addressed to Mr. Paul C. Smith ("Dear Mr. Smith", Editor and General Manager of the San Francisco Chronicle. Acheson thanks Mr. Smith for the sending photographs from the Japanese Instrument of Surrender.

He writes, in part:

"Thank you for the beautiful album of photographs which the San Francisco Chronicle made at the time of the signing of the Treaty of Peace with Japan. I am delighted to have this attractive visual record of that occasion."

Also includes seven original press photographs from the Japanese surrender, ostensibly related to those sent from Smith to Acheson.
