Deadwood Gulch,Dakota North - Lawrence County - c1900 - Golden Reward Mine Chlorination Plant Photog
A classic view of the chlorination plant at the Golden Reward Mine. The photograph measures 9 1/2 x 7 1/2", mounted on biege cardstock measuring 12 x 10". The contrast is medium with some yellowing noted while the focus is good. There are numerous stains and discolored areas on matte with some areas of foxing also found on the image. Hand printed in pencil on the lower left corner of the matte is "Golden Reward Mine," while handwritten on the lower border in a different style is "Clourination [sic] Plant for treeting [sic] low grade ores of Black Hills Mines. . . Deadwood gulch." No photographer is noted. The Golden Reward mine was located in the northern Black Hills. The original Golden Reward Company was organized in 1887 in the Ruby Basin district at the base of Terry Peak. Holdings were increased in 1897 and the company was reorganized as the Golden Reward Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Company. The property contained over 400 patented claims on over 3,000 acres of land. By 1901 it was estimated that eight million dollars worth of gold had been taken out of the Black Hills region, with Golden Reward ranking second with $1.2 million. In 1918 the high costs resulting from World War I caused Golden Reward to close. By this time, the Golden Reward had produced almost $21 million, or 371,000 ounces in gold. Though not achieving the attention of other famous area mines like the Holy Terror and the Uncle Sam, the Golden Reward’s production figures exceeded both of these mines as well as countless others in the Black Hills due to its innovative recovery techniques.
